Let’s Talk: Kristen Suggs-Bohrer

Kristen Suggs-Bohrer with ThisCatLuvsChics (AKA Punk) and Spooks Sparkling Gun (Aka Lexi)

Kristen Suggs-Bohrer and Spooks Sparkling Gun (Aka Lexi) are pictured above. Lexi is a 2 year old quarter horse mare. As Kristen explains, she bought Lexi as a yearling. “I found her through my trainer, Jorge Puente, JP Performance Horses. She was bred and raised at Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL and owned by SRQ Performance horses and Tyler Williams. Owning a horse so young wasn’t really anything ever on my “want list” but my trainer told me he really liked her and well her daddy is the legendary “Spooks Gotta Whiz” so that helped to seal the deal.”

Kristen Suggs-Bohrer and ThisCatLuvsChics (AKA Punk)

Kristen Suggs-Bohrer and ThisCatLuvsChics (AKA Punk) are pictured above. Punk is a 12 year old quarter horse gelding. As Kristen explains ” I purchased Punk 3 years ago from Paige Farr. Punk and I spent our first year together doing all things cow. He won me many Buckles and High Points. It felt amazing to pilot him. After being off for the last 2 years he is back and he is now in training with Jorge Puente as well.”

Get to know them better:

What are their personalities like?

Lexi is so outgoing, loving and she fears nothing! She is the most confident little filly I have ever met. She is a pleaser. She is willing to do anything you ask of her. She is going to be a Champion I can feel it!

Her confidence and the way she carries herself for being so young and inexperienced. She has so much trust in “her people”. Her trainer, Jorge Puente, has helped strengthen all these abilities. She LOVES working for him.

Punk is a punk, LOL! He is a great horse and good teacher and he loves to work. He knows his job and loves to do it. He holds a special spot in my heart that’s for sure.

He is down for anything. He has so many talents like cutting, down the fence, Ranch Riding and Trail. He is the one you can pull out of the stall after sitting for a week or 2 and just hop on and go. He is honest.

Do you have any funny/ interesting stories about any of them?

“Lexi is a mingler. She loves to be involved in everything and anything. Her trainer always tells me she likes to “watch and learn”. Well she watches

someone clip and unclip the latch on her stall everyday so she has learned to as well, LOL!  She lets herself out of her stall and visits all the horses in the barn.”

“When I first bought Punk, I remember always approaching his stall and he would turn away and stand in a corner. He wasn’t very social. He didn’t have much of a choice when I bought him LOL! After being pretty persistent, he now talks to me when he sees me, comes to the door and wants to be loved on. It’s a pretty big accomplishment for him. It just goes to show you only get out what you put in. There are no truer words.”

What accomplishments have you and punk had together?

Punk taught me how to cowhorse. We spent my entire green year together with many winnings. At the start of our next level up he became injured and we haven’t been in the show ring since. I allowed him time to heal and be a horse so for 2 years now he has been at Stone Column Stables in Lexington, Kentucky. He returned to me in November and Punk has just recently started back into work and we will be back in the show ring this month.

What upcoming events do you have with each horse?

Lexi’s first planned entry into a ring will be at the ARHA show held in Ocala this year. They have a 2 YO division and I think it would be a good experience for her.

Punk will be back in the show ring next Saturday making his comeback debut and from there we will travel to some local shows that may pop up and of course the ARHA show in Ocala.

Do you have any personal goals for yourself you wish to mention?

They added a Rookie 1 division to the 2024 TRFAM held in Las Vegas in August and I want so badly to qualify to go with my boy Chester (Dual Reality). So my trainer and I are working hard to make that goal a reality. Jorge and him traveled all of 2023 collecting all sorts of titles and winnings, the biggest accomplishment of theirs was landing a 4th Place spot in the NRHA Novice Horse L2 Top 10 for 2023. The magic those two create in a ring is something not to be missed!

The Support Staff:

My Trainer:

I started riding with my trainer, Jorge Puente, 2 years ago. His way with the horses and his abilities in a show ring speak for themselves. He loves what he does and it shines through on the horses he rides and trains. When he is in the show ring you can see his horses “want” to work for him. That isn’t something you just get, its earned. I have never seen a group of horses want to work harder for someone than the group he rides and trains. The same can be said for his students. I have learned so much in the 2 years I have been with him. He takes the time to explain and make sure you understand when working on perfecting your riding. There are Trainers and then there is Jorge Puente.

My supporters:

My husband, Lonnie Bohrer, none of this would be possible without his support. It is not a cheap sport and busts his butt to make sure I have the ability to care for my horses the way I want to. They are athletes and I treat them as such. They all get weekly Sports massage and Magnawave by Claudia Zorovich at Sport horse muscle therapy. Check ups and maintenance by Dr. Maher at Brandon Equine (Thank You Lauren for always keeping up on what my guys are needing and for always making room for them on his already tight schedule). The entire JP Performance Horse team, everyone is so supportive and helpful. I couldn’t ask for a better barn family. There is one more “behind the scenes” person that rarely gets any credit, Ashley Boyd. She manages my farm at home and ALL the horses at home and in training. Without her I would be lost! So Thank You Ashley for ALL you do!
